Unreal Engine 4 and Nvidia’s real-time Raytracing. That’s amazing.

The announcement of the DirectX Raytracing API at GDC (Game Developers Conference) continues to make noise. Epic Games in partnership with Nvidia and ILMxLAB have released one of the first demos of this technology. It allows discovering the possibilities of this technology in real time through the Unreal Engine.

Do we have here the first images of tomorrow’s games? Maybe. Meanwhile, this demonstration offers a quantum leap forward in 3D rendering, all in a viral universe, Star War. We are still in an experimental context, but the tone is set on what awaits us shortly.

The machine needed for this real-time rendering is based on Nvidia’s Volta GPU architecture and RTX technology. Unfortunately, we are still a long way from the power that everyone else has. The binding machine embeds several Tesla V100 cards.

Also, this demonstration offers high-end cinematic images. The second video reveals, to show that it is a real-time rendering, the use of an iPad as a virtual camera to highlight details, reflections, and depth of field.
