Since 2016, the two main market leaders in PC VR headsets have been the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive. However, the time has passed since these devices were launched. Almost two years later, new devices with superior technical features are finally available.

The Chinese Pimax VR’s Pimax 8K and Starbreeze and Acer’s StarVR One both offer a much higher screen resolution and a much larger field of view than the Rift and Vive. Of course, the cost of these devices and the PC required to use them is high. These are not products for the general public, but for the most demanding businesses or gamers. However, it is time to choose between these two VR helmets to find out what the best of 2018 is.

StarVR One offers a screen resolution of 1830×1464 per eye, a total of 3660×1464, and includes two AMOLED displays capable of displaying 16 million subpixels.

On the other hand, the Pimax 8K offers a native definition of 2560×1440 per eye. However, thanks to upscaling technology, this definition is increased to 3840×2160 per eye. The total number of pixels displayed is 16.6 million. So we are approaching the 8K, although it will be necessary to wait for the future Pimax 8KX to benefit natively from such a definition.

In terms of definition, the Pimax 8K embeds it in the StarVR One. It should be noted, however, that the Pimax 8K screens are of the LCD type. In fact, dark images are displayed with a gray tone and not with a dark black tone as with OLED displays like StarVR One. It could be a real disadvantage.
