After Samsung withdrew from the laptop market in Germany at the end of 2014, the Korean manufacturer wants to start again in June. A total of three models of the Samsung Galaxy Book are listed as starters with the Ion Book, the Flex Book, and a new version of the S Book.
Samsung Galaxy Book S
The Samsung Galaxy Book S is a well-known model, which was already introduced in August last year – albeit on a different basis. While the first version still uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx, the new model is supposed to have an Intel chip. However, Samsung has assured us that the Qualcomm model will not be taken out of the range. It is currently unclear which processor will find its way into the notebook.
With a weight of only 0.95 kg and a total height of only 11.8 mm, the Galaxy Book S is one of the most compact laptops in its class. As no fans are used in this device, the waste heat from the processor is dissipated purely passively through the aluminum case. As a result, the device is quiet in operation, even during the most complex computing tasks. Samsung has 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal memory, which can be expanded with the MicroSD card. The notebook is charged via one of the two USB type C interfaces. The Galaxy Book S can be charged with a mobile phone power supply or even a power bank and is said to have a battery life of somewhat more than 20 hours.
Samsung Galaxy Book Flex
Convertibles are becoming increasingly popular, which is why Samsung offers the Galaxy Book Flex, a device that has a flexible 360-degree hinge. This allows the Flex Book to be transformed into a tablet in a short time. The integrated S-Pen also allows input through a pen. The QLED display, which can be 13″ or 15″, offers Full HD resolution and a maximum brightness of 600 Nit. Therefore, the Book Flex is also suitable for use in the sun.
With a weight of 1.16 kg, the 13-inch is only slightly heavier than the Galaxy Book S. Those who find the integrated Intel Ice-Lake CPU graphics unit insufficient can also choose a model with a dedicated Nvidia Geforce MX250 chip (only 15 inches). Especially the relatively large touchpad can also be used as a wireless charging platform for smartphones or clothing.
The Samsung galaxy book Ion
Those who prefer the classic notebook format may be happy with the Galaxy Book Ion. Because of the case, the 13″ model is even slightly lighter than 1 kg. The blue rear edge, which provides a stylish accent, is particularly eye-catching. The ION also uses a display with QLED technology, which is supposed to have a brightness of 600 nit in full HD resolution.
The Intel Comet Lake CPUs are supposed to provide enough computing power inside, the 69.7 Wh battery should allow runtimes of just over 10 hours. Charging is done through a USB type C and therefore, according to Samsung, 13% of the recharge should be done in 10 minutes. Also on board is the touchpad with integrated wireless charger and a fingerprint scanner integrated into the keyboard.
Prices and availability
According to Samsung, all models mentioned here will be available for purchase from June 5. The Galaxy Book S will be available in the two colors, Mercury Grey and Earth Gold, at a price of 1,129 euros. With the Galaxy Book Ion, there is only one color variant: “Aura Silver”. The model 13″ costs 1,399 euros from UVP, while the variant 15″ starts at 1,499 euros from UVP. Those who need more RAM, SSD, and a dedicated graphics card will have to pay 1,899 euros RRP. There are also a total of three variants for the Galaxy Book Flex, which is supplied in Royal Blue. It starts with the model 13″, which is available from 1,599 euros retail price. With a dedicated graphics card and also more memory, Samsung is charging just under EUR 2,100
