Galaxy Book S, Core i5-L16G7 with Foveros 3D and Sunny Cove to set new throughput standards

The processor of Galaxy Book S is the Core i5-L16G7. That is a five-core hybrid processor that incorporates Intel’s Foveros 3D technology and combines a powerful Sunny Cove core and slower Tremont quad cores on a single chip.

According to Samsung’s specification sheet, the Core i5-L16G7 has a clock speed of up to 3 GHz and a 4 MB L3 cache. Samsung hasn’t specified the graphics aspect of the processor, but it is rumored that Lakefield uses Gen11 graphics that could represent up to 64 execution units (UE). The chip is equipped with 8 GB LPDDRX memory and 256 GB eUFS memory.

A submission from Geekbench 5 last month revealed an unidentified Samsung laptop with a Lakefield processor. This would be the Galaxy Book S model NP767XCM-K01CA. The Core i5-L16G7 apparently scored 868 points and 1,656 points in single and multi-core tests. The Galaxy Book S, which uses the Snapdragon 8cx, scored about 600-700 points in the single-core test and 2100-2700 points in the multi-core test.

We can’t definitely talk about that, but as far as the Geekbench 5 test is concerned, the Core i5-L16G7 shows an enormous single-core advantage (up to 44.7%) compared to the Snapdragon 8cx. However, the Lakefield chip still has a long way to go to reach the multi-core performance of the Snapdragon 8cx, as the latter seems to be up to 63% faster.

The Galaxy Book S has a 13.3-inch FHD touchscreen with a maximum brightness of 600 nits. In terms of connectivity, the Galaxy Book S has two USB-C ports, a microSD card reader, and combined headphone input and output port. The notebook also offers Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity. Unfortunately, the Gigabit LTE functionality is lost on the model with the Intel power supply. The battery life is another drawback of the Lakefield model.

Although both the ARM and Intel models are equipped with the same 42 Wh battery, the Core i5 L16G7 processor doesn’t seem to be as energy-efficient as the Snapdragon 8cx. Intel hasn’t officially announced Lakefield yet, but it is reported that the hybrid chips operate within the 5W to 7W limit.

Samsung has not announced the price or availability of the new Galaxy Book S, but we expect the company to make a formal announcement very soon. We will keep you informed.
