10 nm DRAM: Samsung pioneers the industry by incorporating third-generation technology

Extreme Ultraviolet Processing (EUV) marks new milestones in semiconductor technology. We have told you a few moments before about the invention of a new LASER EUV technology for semiconductor engraving that could revolutionize the nm game once the technology matures. And today it is Samsung who is taking advantage of EUV technology by introducing the world’s first third-generation DRAM technology at 10 nm engraving. Today, for the first time in the industry, Samsung announced that it has developed a 10 nanometer (1z-nm) eight gigabit (Gb) Double Speed DDR4 Data DRAM of the third generation.

A mere 16 months after the start of the second generation 10nm (1y-nm) 8Gb DDR4 class mass production, the development of 1z-nm 8Gb DDR4 without the use of Extreme Ultraviolet Processing (EUV) has extended the boundaries of the DRAM scale even further.

As 1z-nm becomes the industry’s smallest memory processing node, Samsung is ready to respond to growing market demands with its new DDR4 DRAM, which offers more than 20% higher productivity than the previous 1y-nm version. Mass production of 1z-nm and 8Gb DDR4 will begin in the second half of the year to accommodate the next generation of enterprise servers and high-end PCs expected to be launched in 2020.

The development of Samsung’s 1z-nm DRAM also paves the way for the next generation of DDR5, LPDDR5 and GDDR6 memories, the future of the industry. The 1z-nm products with higher capacity and performance will enable Samsung to strengthen its competitiveness and consolidate its leadership position in the premium DRAM market for applications such as servers, graphics and mobile devices.

Taking the opportunity, Samsung said that it had increased part of its main memory production at the Pyeongtaek plant in Korea to meet the growing demand for DRAMs.
