A few days ago the world of video games came to a standstill. Sony, the creator of the PlayStation, announced on its website that it will present a unique vision of the future that brings together creativity and technology at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2020″. So all the signs are that we will have news about the anticipated PlayStation 5.

Despite the wink, Sony hasn’t confirmed that we will have news about the PlayStation 5, but it could be a surprise.

It is known that CES 2020 will open its doors to the public from 7 to 10 January in the city of Las Vegas, USA. The Sony conference, on the other hand, will take place one day earlier, on Monday, 6 January, at 19:00.

In line with this, we have decided to collect all the confirmed data we have on the PlayStation 5 so far.

Launch planned for late 2020

The PlayStation 5 will be available worldwide by the end of 2020. There is currently no exact launch date, but it could be between November and December of this year. At the same time, the release of the Sony video game console coincides with that of the Xbox Series X, the platform of rival Microsoft.

Latest generation technology

As for the CPU, the processor that does all the work for the PlayStation 5 will be a third-generation AMD Ryzen with eight cores of 7nm Zen 2 architecture. And the GPU will be a part of the Radeon Navi family.

According to Mark Cerny, an architect of the PS5, the machine will support a maximum resolution of 8K (7,680 x 4,320 pixels). However, this does not mean that video games will run in this size. Everything will ultimately depend on the developers.

Ray Tracing

The PS5 will also feature ray tracing, a technology based on the simulation of the sun’s rays in real-time, which significantly increases the quality and realism of the images. Currently, this type of algorithm has begun to be applied in the field of video games, although it is common in the film industry.

3D audio

The PlayStation 5 will feature a new custom 3D audio chip, which Sony says will “redefine” the sound you can make in a video game.

For Cerny, developing the audio on PS3 and PS4 was not the right thing to do. “As a gamer, I was a little frustrated that the sound doesn’t change that much between PS3 and PS4. With the new console, the dream is to show how the sound changes dramatically when you put a lot of hardware power into it”.

Solid State Drive (SSD)

In April 2019, Sony announced information on the memory hardware that the PS5 will have a Solid State Drive (SSD), a version of memory that does not have magnetic disks in its operation, but it applies a non-volatile memory. The SSD provides a higher data rate.

As a result, the loading times of the screen will be much shorter. As an example, Cerny used the video game Spider-man: fast rides in the game Insomniac Games take 15 seconds on the PS4 Pro, and 0.8 seconds on the PS5.

However, it was added that the installation of the video games will be mandatory. “Instead of treating the games as one big block of data, we’re allowing more precise access to the data,” the American said.

In this way, Sony assures that the console will be “the fastest in the world”.

Dualshock 5 control

One of the most eye-catching and eagerly awaited innovations by the public is the inclusion of an improved Dualshock 5 controller (although the name of the controller is not confirmed). It is already known that the triggers (L2 and R2 buttons) will have haptic technology that allows more immersion in the game, and will have better resistance.

And how does this affect the game? Sony explains in its blog: “You can even feel a variety of different textures when you drive through grass fields or when the car is driving on mud.

Another detail about the DS5 is that it will have a USB-C port that makes it easy to charge with the user’s mobile phone cable. As well as improved vibration motors and a more powerful speaker.

Backward compatibility with PS4 games

The PS4 titles we bought can be used in the new PlayStation 5. This is known as retro compatibility and is given by the physical disk reader that will hold the PS5 or digital if we have it in the library.

Also, as we expected, the disc reader will not be removed and will be present on the PS5, which will allow us to play Blu-rays in 4K (basic format of games on the next console), in addition to the possibility of playing.

PlayStation VR compatible with PS5

There’s good news for all PlayStation VR owners: PlayStation 5 will have support for the above device. However, there is a chance that new glasses will be released for the PS5 in the future.

“I won’t go into detail about our virtual reality strategy,” said Cerny, “except to say that virtual reality is very important to us and that the current PSVR headphones are compatible with the new console.
