Nintendo is having trouble: Today they revealed that their software source code and technical specifications for the Nintendo Wii hardware have been leaked over the net.
Nintendo Wii: Source code and hardware schematics filtered
Filtering includes details of Verilog login design, firmware, PCB, and chip designs. It covers just about everything that a company with qualified engineers needs to produce a fully functional copy of the Nintendo Wii flagship game.
Nintendo systems have been subject to many attempted imitations in the past. One of the most famous was the homemade clone of the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System). This leak seems to have originated from an attack that recently hacked the servers of BroadOn, a company that was contracted by Nintendo during the development of the Wii console.
It’s still too early to estimate the consequences of this incident, but from this point on, we’ll be able to keep an eye out for any release of a console or similar platform identical or compatible with that of Nintendo. We believe that the company will prepare for a possible legal action in anticipation of a potential impact if such an event occurs, which could transpire over the course of next year.
