Intel Releases Optane 905P in M.2-22110 Format

Intel has officially unveiled a new M.2 version of its SSD 905P, reducing the size of high-performance Optane to a smaller format than ever before.

Until now, Intel Optane M.2 storage has been limited to small Opta Cache and SSD acceleration drives (118GB max.), all of which were limited to PCIe 3.0 x 2 speeds. The new Intel M.2 905P is configured to change that, offering high-end Optane performance with PCIe 3.0 4x broadband access and an estimated storage capacity of 380 GB per unit.

This 380GB estimate comes from Intel’s live demo, which used a RAID configuration of four of these drives to deliver approximately 1.5TB of storage. The M.2 form factor will enable Optane drives to be used on mobile systems and a wider range of consumer desktops.

Previously, the Intel 905P was available as a PCIe plug-in card or as a 2.5-inch U.2 storage unit, none of which is commonly used for desktop storage.

The specifications for the Intel Opta SSD 905P series are listed below. Intel has not released the final specifications of its new 905P M.2 SSD.

Main Characteristics

Product 905P 900P
Capacities 960GB (Add-in-card)

480 GB (2.5 inches U.2)

480GB (Add-in-card)

280GB (Add-in-card)

280GB (2.5-inch U.2)

Controller Intel Custom NVMe Intel Custom NVMe
Type of memory 3D XPoint (Optane) 3D XPoint (Optane)
Sequential reading 2,600MB / s 2,500MB / s
Sequential writing 2,200MB / s 2,000MB / s
Random reading 575,000 IOPS 550,000 IOPS
Random Writing 550,000 IOPS 500,000 IOPS
Resistance 10 DWPD 10 DWPD
Warranty 5 years 5 years

We can see that both models achieve a sequential reading speed of 2600 MB/s. The writing speed is 2200 MB/s.

If we look at the performance figures in the 4 KB random access, we have 575,000 IOPS in reading and 550,000 IOPS in writing. Being a very fast unit, it does not outperform others like the Samsung 970 Pro. This marks a sequential read rate of up to 3,500 MB/sec and a sequential write rate of up to 2,700 MB/sec.

But in the technical characteristics, we can read a fact that is quite impressive. This is none other than latency, with a value of less than 10µs, both in reading and writing.

In addition, it has a nominal resistance of 10 DWPD (Drive Writes per Day). This puts it above its predecessor, the Intel Optane 900P. It achieved sequential speeds of 2500/2000 MB/s.

The 480GB Intel Optane will be released at a price of $600. Its big brother, the 960GB Intel Optane, will cost more than $1,100.
