Huawei recently launched a new generation of storage solution products for the enterprise sector, the OceanStor Storage Pacific Series, a series of drives with up to 20TB of SMR hard disk capacity that can achieve up to 19.2 PB capacity with 99.9999% reliability.
Huawei offers 20TB SMR server drives
According to Huawei, the OceanStor Pacific can be configured with 4096 nodes, using an elastic EC algorithm instead of RAID. The advantage is that 91% of the disk space can be used. In terms of reliability, up to 4 nodes can fail simultaneously without losing data or affecting the performance of the service.
Robert Foley, the chief architect of Huawei Data Storage, described the Pacific Series in a presentation at Huawei Data Storage’s Online Computing Day. He said the series had 2U power nodes, 4U and 5U capacity nodes, and 2U flash-based high-performance nodes for high-performance computing. An ultra-high density flash node is on its way.
The 5U storage cabinet holds 120 hard drives – that’s 24 drives per rack unit – and Huawei contrasts this with Dell Technologies’ Isilon 80 drive H5600 cabinet with 4U and 20 drives per unit. Pacific’s drive bays have a capacity of 2.4PB, which means they use 20TB SMR drives.
Currently, the only hard disk drive on the market with this capacity and SMR is the Western Digital DC H650, so Huawei was ahead of other manufacturers such as Seagate and Toshiba in this respect.
Although the SMR hard drive has been criticized for its reliability, the Huawei design makes the system 99.9999% reliable, so there is no need to worry about errors with this type of hard drive. We will keep you informed.
