A report has indicated that Intel is working on a 20TB SSD, which is possible in a 2.5-inch format using QLC NAND memory technology. We’ll tell you all the details.
Intel and Micron are leaders in the development of QLC NAND memory technology, which will provide a 33% increase in storage density over current TLC memory and a 100% increase in storage density over NAND MLC memory. QLC memory is capable of storing up to 4 bits of information per cell, allowing SSD manufacturers to offer higher capacities in smaller form factors, making it easier to create very compact storage media.
Anandtech and PC Perspective reports have stated that Intel is working on an enterprise-grade SSD based on QLC memory, with 20TB of storage capacity in a small 2.5-inch form factor, which is used in most current SSD SATA. It is mentioned that Intel may have to increase the thickness of the unit to 15 mm in order to include the 20 TB capacity.
The information doesn’t stop there, as Intel is also working on the development of new QLC memory-based SSDs for the home sector, which should help deliver high capacity at lower prices than today. Let’s remember that Samsung already launched a TLC-based SSD that had a capacity of 30.72 TB in the same 2.5-inch form factor. The latter makes it possible to see new SSDs with even greater capacity with QLC memory, only a matter of time.
