As they say in The Verge, this dynamic is activated in the comments of brand publications or pages. When reviewing comments in these publications, some users may see tags indicating that certain users live in the same city or have gone to the same university. Or it could mean that they belong to the same company, that they are part of the same group, etc.

This means personalized tags addressed to the owner of the Facebook account without being visible to the rest of the users viewing the posts. Of course, this only works for users who are not listed as friends or who have created some kind of interaction. The idea is that users create new connections by finding these little similarities with strangers.

From there, users will decide whether they want to get in touch with these people, who have some similarities or simply leave it as a simple curiosity. This test is currently being conducted with a very small group of US users.

We’ll have to wait and see how this experiment develops, and if Facebook decides it’s worth implementing it for all users.
