Convertible folding device from LG could be a smartphone, tablet or laptop

Although folding phones are not yet mainstream, they seem to have great potential. LG clearly wants to further develop a phone that is not just a device that can be bent and curled.

According to a report by South Korean media company Asia Times, the company has filed a patent for a design that includes a hybrid size.

The device unfolds, develops in a shape that resembles a traditional smartphone. By extending its right side, it can be used as a tablet. If you subsequently need more screen space, the display can be extended further and collapsed so that it can be used as a laptop.

Well-designed foldable convertible devices could help LG turn its fortunes

In theory, the idea sounds very promising. If the form factor meets the right specifications, LG will have a powerful, fully functional device.

According to the patent image, the screen of this LG phone has the dual function of being both stretchable and foldable. When the user pulls on the right side of the phone, the phone can be transformed from a small screen into a tablet, which then folds and becomes a laptop. The lower screen can be used as a keyboard, while the upper, newly stretched screen can be used as a laptop screen.

However, finalizing such a design would be tricky. After all, the seller hasn’t even nailed down a collapsible phone yet. And as for LG, it doesn’t even make a traditional smartphone. Even if the company reduces the hardware part, it will never be easy to adapt the software to such a device.

Finally, the patent application cannot confirm that LG will continue with the design. In fact, the company has filed numerous patents for folding phones in recent years. However, these patents are still pending.

However, the report indicates that the company is preparing to launch an experimental device this year. It is reported that the folding phone will be launched in 2021, and the company could demonstrate the phone at the next MWC.

For the time being, the company is sticking with its dual-screen accessory as an alternative to the ripple screen.
