AMD Navi 20 expected with ray tracing and massive GCN architecture tweaks

New filtration shows that there is also the possibility that the next generation Navi 20 will have a major architectural change and support for ray tracing. The rumor comes from YouTuber RedGamingTech. AMD currently has a massive problem in the dedicated graphics card market. The Nvidia GTX 16 series has once again penetrated the central zone of the red team: the middle class. AMD simply has nothing against that at the moment. The next big innovation will be Navi. In the first generation, however, AMD could only play in the middle class. This is also indicated by the leaks to date.

AMD solution for high-end graphics cards to compete with Nvidia RTX

What is still missing are high-end graphics cards. In this area, the company currently only offers the Radeon VII, which with 16 GB of HBM2 memory, and is excellent for creatives, but most games are tied to the RTX 2080.

What is new in AMD Navi 20?

However, the exact changes in architecture that are going to take place are still totally unknown. But as the Navi 20 is also based on the GCN architecture, the changes of architecture cannot be so huge. It would be more logical for the company to optimize the performance of the calculations according to Microsoft’s DXR standard to allow ray tracing effects.

The largest filtration of December last year highlighted three models: the RX 3080, the RX 3070 and the RX 3060. The top model RX 3080 should achieve the performance of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070, but it only costs $250. The RX 3070 and RX 3060, which are expected to cost USD 229 and USD 179 respectively, will continue to compete against the RTX 2070 and GTX 16 series. If this happens as predicted then AMD would again have a very good position in the mid-range segment.

AMD Navi 20 GCN improvements with ray tracing

Navi 20 is expected to reach the market in 2020 and it will be able to compete for the high-end segment of Nvidia. This requires fundamental changes in the GCN architecture, which will compensate for the disadvantages of Graphics Core Next. Another important feature is that AMD Navi 20 will be equipped with its own ray tracing technology.
