AMD Dali and Renoir set for 7nm Zen 2 architecture with Navi graphics?

Open source enthusiasts have found that two APUs appear in the AMDGPU Linux driver, Renoir, and Dali. Renoir will be covering the notebook and desktop platforms and positioning the high-end; Dali is the mobile-specific entry processor, the low-voltage drivers’ information also fits the positioning of Dali.

Since Picasso is still based on the 12nm Zen+ architecture, we have reason to believe that Renoir and Dali will upgrade to the 7nm Zen 2 architecture while integrating navigation graphics, which is in some ways consistent with the hardware architecture of PS5 and Xbox Scarlett next year.

The Linux-centric Anglo-Saxon website Phoronix has discovered a new patch on the Linux AMDGPU driver that apparently confirms that AMD is working on another APU (accelerated processing unit) beside Renoir called AMD Dali. Detailed roadmaps have shown that AMD is preparing two separate APU adaptations for 2020. Renoir will address both the mobile and desktop markets, and Dali will be a low-cost APU designed exclusively for mobile devices.

AMD’s next-generation APU profile is gradually clear: dual architecture

AMD Dali would be a new APU based on the Raven Ridge architecture

The newly discovered Linux patch adds the ASIC ID and implements a voltage limit for Dalí. More interesting, however, is the description that Dali is based on Raven Ridge, which raises the question of whether Dali will have cores based on the AMD Zen 2 microarchitecture.

AMD Dali, AMD Dali and Renoir set for 7nm Zen 2 architecture with Navi graphics?,

If we remember, Picasso, which made debut this year with the new second generation of Ryzen 3000 APUs, still uses a 12 nm process node. Unfortunately, AMD APUs are the only products that have not gone through the new 7nm manufacturing process. However, Renoir is expected to do so, and Dali could follow along as a partner.

So far we are convinced that Renoir will probably use the Zen 2 and Vega graphics microarchitectures. As a low-end part, AMD could get away with using a different processor microarchitecture for AMD Dali. We wouldn’t be surprised if AMD chose a combination of Zen+ cores and Vega graphics.
