AMD plans to introduce a Navi 10 GPU in 2021 with the goal of breaking through the market.
After the mining-related inflation of the graphics card industry, it appears that this market has disappeared because prices have normalized. However, AMD is preparing a GPU without Display Core Next and without Video Core Next for the miners. It would be based on Navi 10, like the RX 5000.
AMD Navi 10 GPU for crypto coins
The whole message comes from a new Linux patch that prepares support for a “Navi 10 blockchain SKU”. This is how the description of this mysterious GPU reads, and it is identified as “0x731E”.
Phoronix claims that the difference between this GPU and the other Navi 10 (RX 5700 and 5700XT series) is the absence of Display Core Next (DCN) and Video Core Next (VCN), two very important engines. However, it is not known if they are not brought directly or if they are disabled, so it seems that this GPU has no video outputs. This is common with special mining graphics cards.
The same Phoronix portal ” takes” the possibility that the release of this AMD Radeon will not come before 2021 if you see the Linux patch information. ASICs have become more and more common, so there are still many options in the blockchain.
One of AMD’s goals would be to separate two target groups from their graphics cards: gamers and miners. To prevent the high demand from disrupting the entire market, the brand would launch its line of mining-specific GPUs.
This way, neither the players will be left without their RX 6000, nor the miners without their GPUs for crypto coins. Since it is based on Navi 10, it makes a lot of sense, because many miners prefer to build their equipment with the RX 5700 XT rather than with an RTX 2080 for example.
The reason for this is the triple performance/price ratio, whereby the RX 5700 XT is the most cost-effective GPU for this triangle. One of the improvements to this mysterious graphics card would be to include voltage and power settings to achieve greater energy efficiency.
At the moment, Ethereum is the most interesting cryptocurrency because it has doubled its value compared to 2019. On the other hand, we find it a bit odd that AMD wants to launch a graphics card in 2021 that is not based on RDNA 2 but on RDNA.
The main problem with this graphics card is that the miners cannot resell it to gamers because it does not contain video output. This is important because many tried to get a better return on their investment by reselling the GPU.
In all of this, we think they are a little late in the game because the crypto world had been in full swing between 2017 and 2018. At that time GPUs generated an average of £10/day, but today they don’t.
