AMD achieved 40% market share for CPUs as per PassMark report

In a report on all PCs registered in PassMark, the company reported that AMD’s market share has increased to 40% for the first time ever.

PassMark reports that AMD is represented in 40% of the computers worldwide

This data comes after Intel suffered delays and stock problems with its 14nm processors and strong competition from AMD, which has taken the opportunity to launch its Ryzen series with advantages in performance, price, and the number of cores.

The AMD Ryzen 3000 series was introduced in July 2019 and marked the company’s historic transition to a 16/14nm node process towards 7nm. For the first time in more than three decades, Intel lost its leadership position in process nodes in the x86 industry and AMD emerged as the company that made the biggest profit. AMD’s 7nm processors not only proved capable of matching (and sometimes exceeding) Intel’s processors in performance but offered the same at a much lower price.

AMD’s use of “predatory” prices seems to pay off quickly as they take more and more market share away from Intel. While Intel continues to lead, AMD has regained up to 40% market share in the last PassMark report, and we haven’t seen that since 2006.

On the graphs, you can see that AMD’s market share gain accelerated from Q1 2019, just before the launch of the Ryzen 3000 series and more, when these new processors were already on sale.

Hopefully, we will see what the new Comet Lake S processors can do to stop Intel’s loss of market share. Meanwhile, AMD plans to launch new Zen 3-based processors with frequency and IPC performance improvements as early as 2020, so the trend could continue this year in favor of the red company.
