Xiaomi features periscopic zoom in a mid-range format, with 5x optical zoom and now with affordable 5G connectivity.
As the Chinese manufacturer announced last week, the Mi 10 family now has a new member. The Xiaomi Mi 10 Youth Edition is now official, with a new camera in periscope format that promises digital zoom up to 50x, in line with other manufacturers in a completely different price range.
After the standard Mi 10 with a much higher price than the brand’s usual standard or a Mi 10 Pro that goes even further, Xiaomi introduced a slightly more modest Mi 10 Lite, which is very similar in features to this Mi 10 Youth Edition. Of course, this includes 5G connectivity, and in 2020, it will also be available.
Mi 10 Youth Edition: periscope zoom
The Mi 10 Youth Edition is, like almost all current mobile phones, a device with a large screen. It has a 6.6-inch AMOLED panel, which, while not matching the high refresh rates of more advanced mobile phones, retains certain metrics that are designed for a great experience. There is a strong emphasis on calibration, a maximum brightness that, as the brand promises, will reach 800 nits brightness and touch sampling up to 180 Hz.

Inside is a Snapdragon 765G processor, Qualcomm’s second processor for 2020, and while it has more advanced features, it retains some of the features and technologies of this generation and top-of-the-line, with 5G connectivity built into the chip itself. This makes it both more economical and efficient than the Snapdragon 865.
Because the Snapdragon 765G has an advanced 7nm manufacturing process, its power consumption will be lower than that of many competitors or brand chips. It also has 5G connectivity both NSA non-standalone and SA standalone, more advanced, albeit only in the U-6 frequencies.
But the great novelty of this terminal is undoubtedly its camera, in addition to the main sensor of 48 MP, which will probably be the Sony IMX 586, which we see in many areas, from economical to not so much, a more modest and unspecified wide-angle and a probably dispensable macro sensor, Xiaomi climbs on the car of the periscope format zoomed telephoto.
This design makes it possible to use more space inside the terminal for a 5x optical zoom thanks to the interior mirror. Combined with the digital magnification, this gives a maximum of up to “50x zoom”, which is used to promote the brand, although it is common for these magnifications to show very little detail. Therefore we can expect up to 10x zoom with relatively good results.
Finally, the Mi 10 Youth Edition has a relatively slim design and a thickness of around 7.9 millimeters, as well as a 4160 mAh battery which is average for this size. The quick charging system was expected but not specified. For reference: the Mi 10 Lite has a maximum power of 20 W.
Xiaomi Mi 10 Youth Edition vs Mi 10 Lite 5G: the datasheet
The Mi 10 Youth Edition seems to be little more than a small evolution of the Mi 10 Lite 5G, a more modest terminal with which it has many of the main features in common.
As we can see, in this case, the fourth sensor, which corresponds to the depth sensor, is omitted by the new 5x optical zoom.
