Windows 10 Redstone 4 build 17123 now available with support for HEIF

Microsoft has released a new version for its Windows 10 Insider program. That is Windows 10 Redstone 4 build 17123 today introduces the new HEIF image format. Along with this, Microsoft has also shared some known issues that must be taken into account before testing the Windows Mixed Reality features.

Windows 10 Redstone 4 build 17123 adds support for HEIF images

Undoubtedly, one of the most important novelties of this version is the inclusion of the high-quality image format HEIF. Also, that comes to replace the image formats JPG, PNG, and GIF, with better quality and higher compression values for the web. But this would not be its only characteristics.

HEIF is an image container that uses modern codecs such as HEVC to improve quality, compression, and capabilities compared to previous formats such as JPEG, GIF, and PNG. In addition to traditional individual images, HEIF supports the coding of image sequences, collections of photographs, auxiliary photos. Such as alpha or depth maps, live pictures and video, audio and HDR for higher contrast. Windows 10 Redstone 4 build 17123 offers, for the first time, support for HEIF visualization. Also, it must be said that only these images can be displayed, but still cannot be edited.

Windows Mixed Reality is also included in this early version of Redstone 4. But that comes with some limitations and problems that Microsoft hopes to solve in successive versions.

It is expected that the update Redstone 4 for Windows 10 called Spring Creators Update (unofficial name) arrives in April with many new features.
