After many twists and turns, Microsoft finally pressed the green button. Windows 10 Redstone 4 is now available for the general public. This launch is not going to concern everyone at first. The global deployment will take place in waves. This allows the giant to control the installation process and make corrections if necessary.

It takes the firm about three months to complete the deployment of new Windows 10 upgrades. By next summer all PCs running Windows 10 should be able to install it through the Windows Update service.

This version brings many things, but it is not a breathtaking version. We should not expect radical changes but improvements here and there and a few new things. For example, the Timeline function was introduced last year at the “Build Developer” conference. Its objective is to create snapshots of running applications so that it can resume its activities later.

The Microsoft Edge browser benefits from several improvements. These small alterations reinforce its relevance in the face of competition embodied by Google’s Chrome or Mozilla’s Firefox.

The OS introduces “Near Share,” a feature that simplifies data sharing with devices connected via Bluetooth. Quiet Hours” is evolving into Focus Assist. It becomes possible to sleep notifications according to a particular schedule or to switch to “silent” mode.

The list is naturally much longer. These are just a few examples.

Microsoft also makes more subtle changes and improvements to improve the Windows experience. Fluent Design is now available on the entire operating system. The taskbar has the effect of an acrylic blur. The “Settings” application has also been reworked with new options.

Microsoft advises users affected by this first wave of an upgrade to proceed with its installation. The next meeting is scheduled for next fall with the arrival of Redstone 5. Its development started several weeks ago with the publication of the first builds through the Windows Insider program.
