There were many waiting for it, finally, it came true: During CES 2020, Samsung launched its first M.2 PCI-E 4.0 SSD under the name “980 Pro”, based on the 6th generation of NAND memory.
This SSD will have read speeds of up to 6500MB/s and write speeds of up to 5000MB/s and will be available in 250GB, 500GB and 1TB sizes. Unfortunately, this is all the information available as Samsung has not made an official announcement and the representatives who were at CES were unable to add any additional information. The only thing they mentioned is that it will be launched in the second quarter of the year, so there is still some information missing.
Apparently a new driver for this PCI-E 4.0 interface is being used, probably owned by Samsung, and we know that it will use the 6th generation of NAND memory, with 128 layers instead of 64 as used by the current chips. Despite this higher density, possibly due to controller limitations, we will only see models up to 1TB.
