Samsung introduces its first PCIe-5.0 SSD with 15.7 GB/s. Samsung begins gearing up for its first SSDs that will use the ultra-fast PCIe 5.0 interconnect interface.

The Korean company has announced preliminary details about its first PCIe-5.0 SSDs for the enterprise market, one step ahead of their arrival in the high-volume market.

The drives will be available in the E3.S 1T form factor. They are planned to be available within a year, just in time for the first PCIe 5.0-compatible enterprise platforms to hit the market. These platforms are the well-known EPYC Genoa from AMD and Sapphire Rapids from Intel.

The first SSD of this kind will be the PM1743, which will use Samsung’s own controller. It will also use sixth-generation TLC-V NAND memory. The PM1743 is said to have a capacity of up to 1 DWPD.

PCIe 5.0, Samsung introduces its first PCIe 5.0 SSD, offering 15.7 GB/s,

The SSD will use a PCIe 5.0 x 4 slot, single-port or dual-dual-port, with an E3.S-1T form factor (111.5 mm × 31.5 mm (L×W)). Thanks to PCIe 5.0, such an SSD can reach speeds of up to 15.7 GB/s, with a power consumption of up to 25 W.

The goal seems clear, take advantage of the enterprise market will migrate to platforms AMD EPYC Genoa and Intel Sapphire Rapids with support for PCIe Gen 5, with the aim of exponentially increasing the speeds of reading and writing data.

Finally, Samsung is already working on its 176-layer V-NAND memory modules, which will also be available for its mass-market products, although we don’t know when they will hit the market.

In particular, Samsung plans to use its 176-layer 7th generation V-NAND memory for its PCIe Gen 5 SSDs designed for client PCs, although availability has not yet been announced.
