To date, Sony has highlighted the importance of backwards compatibility in its new generation console, and it is also one of the most anticipated features of the players for the new PS5.
So how will backward compatibility work on the PlayStation 5? A new patent from Sony has given us the first details about what it will be like and what tests will be done to avoid errors between different consoles.
The first thing Sony will do is run the original game on the console for which it was designed to see how it works. Then it will run on the new hardware to see what points they have in common.
The purpose of these tests is to adjust the operating parameters of the new generation console to achieve the same level of performance as the hardware for which it was originally designed. Since a new console doesn’t necessarily mean better performance from the old game, Sony wants to offer an experience that meets retro compatibility expectations in its new machine.
But that’s just the beginning of the methodology that’s being carried out, because once these tests are complete, you’ll see that it’s stable. Sony will optimise performance to see if the previous console’s game benefits from this new hardware until the application fails. This sets the limit that the console can reach.
This way, no changes are made to the original game code, so old titles can run smoothly on the new generation console.
