Microsoft will deploy Zen 2 CPU and a Radeon GPU in next XBOX ‘Scarlett’

Microsoft announced its next video game console with the code name Scarlett. The rumors about the new generation of Microsoft consoles are slowly coming to light, and they tell us that Microsoft will be using AMD hardware again, as was the case with XBOX One and XBOX One X. The first rumors are that the next video game console will use a Zen 2 processor and a Radeon GPU.

XBOX ‘Scarlett’ – Microsoft would again rely on AMD, now with Zen 2 architecture and Radeon graphics

The next generation of consoles is expected to come onto the market in 2020, with a significant improvement over current consoles at both CPU and GPU levels, enabling the next big change in game graphics where 4K is targeted as the new standard.

Brad Sams, Executive Editor of Thurrott.com, has stated that Microsoft’s next-generation Project Scarlett consoles will include AMD’s 7nm Zen 2 processors and a next-generation graphics unit, probably Radeon. It also states that backward compatibility is guaranteed in the next XBOX, which was one of Microsoft’s main concerns.

With Scarlett, the new XBOX aims at resolutions of 4K and 60 frames per second, which is the second time that Microsoft wants to reach this standard and leave behind the 30 fps that accompany us in most video game consoles. Brad Sams also claims that hardware will be the least “distinctive” hardware than in previous generations.

Given the designs of AMD’s next-generation EPYC processors, it is likely that the Scarlett console will use a multi-die system architecture. This does not mean that you will be using an EPYC processor in any way for a cost issue. What we don’t know at this point is whether they will (again) rely on a Ryzen processor or an APU. We also don’t know exactly which GPU it will have, but we could bet that it will be the Navi architecture.
