“Pokemon Scarlet” and “Pokemon Violet” are two new games that will blend old and new Pokemon in brand new areas. Developer Game Freak announced the new game during its 14-minute Pokemon Presents broadcast, and as part of Pokemon Day, the company gave us a sneak peek at what we could see in the next-gen Pokemon game.
Surprisingly, Nintendo announced Pokémon Scarlet and Violet yesterday, which will be released later this year. The ninth generation of Pokemon is on its way, and much sooner than we expected.
It seems that the theme of the game this time around will be heavily tied to Hispanic culture, as seen in the font used in the games’ names, the firuletes, and the purple and scarlet colors that are typical of Portuguese/Spanish culture and appear in many of their patriotic symbols.
Other than this mysterious trailer and the names and basic specs of the three starters: Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly, no information has been revealed yet.
The adventure is set in a region very reminiscent of Spain and Portugal, with some clear hints of the real-world locations seen in the trailer. Whether it’s the suspicious Sagrada Familia building seen at the end of the trailer or a Pikachu in Parque Güell, it’s clear that we’re returning to Europe in this new Pokemon adventure.
Major details were not revealed, but what is known is that it will be open world
It’s a good time to be a Pokémon fan: For the first time in a long time, we will have three major Pokemon releases in a 12-month period. After Pokemon Legends Arceus and Diamond and Shiny Pearl, The Pokemon Company will now bring us Pokémon Scarlet and Violet at fiend of 2022.
It’s clear that Pokémon games have been working hard to change over the past few years, and repeatedly.Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee were released in 2018, eliminating random encounters altogether in favor of Pokémon that walk around the map. This carried over into 2019’s Sword & Shield, which added vast open areas filled with Pokémon and places to explore.
The games seem to be a bit of a departure from what we’re used to: Both are described by the developer as an “evolutionary” step forward for Pokemon, apparently based on what was established in the Wild Zone of Sword and Shield, and will feature an “open world where various borderless cities seamlessly merge with nature.”
The announcement states, “Pokémon can be found everywhere in this open-world: in the skies, on the sea, and in the streets.”
We don’t know much about the differences between versions yet (judging from previous games, we’ll likely have legendary and regular Pokémon, locations, and trainers unique to each version), though Game Freak noted that trainers “will have different costumes depending on the game.” But oh well, let’s wait for the official release and see what the 9th generation of Pokemon brings.
