Nvidia RTX 3090, reveals new cooling and 12-pin connector

Recent news indicate that Nvidia will launch its RTX 3000 series cards, including the RTX 3080 and flagship RTX 3090 cards, on September 1. Nvidia is preparing for a big event next week for Ampere GeForce by turning the design of its next-generation graphics cards completely revamped. In a newly released video, Nvidia’s engineers and designers discuss the changes made to its next-generation amp-based GeForce cards.

At the end of Nvidia’s video, the company briefly refreshes an image that looks like the RTX 3090. Focusing on cooling throughout the video, Nvidia points out that the company has redesigned its cooling solution to improve airflow and overcome some of the limitations of cooling solutions currently available on GPUs.

This cooling solution and part of the triangular flag board also appear to have resulted in some changes to the power connector. Leaks indicate that Nvidia is using a 12-pin connector, which the company confirmed today. This 12-pin connector is smaller than two conventional 8-pin connectors, and Nvidia will be installing adapters that are compatible with 8-pin cables. Nvidia chose the 12-pin connector to create more space on the board for components and cooling, but it is unclear what the company’s external board partner is.

Nvidia’s video also mentions a new narrow sheet spring that provides space for the back of the card and offers an overall more robust mechanical structure. This could be important as recently leaked images indicate that the RTX 3090 will occupy three slots with 24GB of GDDR6X memory and will act as a top-of-the-line Titan card for this product generation. In other words, it looks like a beast of a GPU for PC games.

Nvidia has a lot of details to confirm next week, including the kind of performance boost we can expect from the RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 cards compared to the RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti cards. The price will also be important, especially as rumors circulate about a $1400 price for the RTX 3090.
