Microsoft is testing a new facet in the early versions of Windows 10 Redstone 5 that will come along this year. It turns out that regardless of the browser you use, Windows 10 will open all the links in the emails of the Mail application in the Edge browser.
No matter which browser you have selected as the default, it will always open links in Edge
As of Windows 10, Build 17623 “Redstone 5” was started to test a change that will make Edge the default browser for reading email links. The decision is not final, and Microsoft has not even released the current version of “Redstone 4,” informally known as Spring Creators Update.
Under the new rules, it does not matter which browser you have selected as the default; If you use the primary Mail application in Windows, any link you click will open Edge. Outlook will apparently open the links using the default browser, as always.
Microsoft has always been very keen on these kinds of decisions. And like the time I try to make Edge and Bing the default applications to open Cortana’s search links. With a market share of just under 4 %, it is fair to say that the market has spoken, and against the Edge browser, that almost nobody uses.
Just as Microsoft always makes controversial decisions. And it is also true that it often listens to the community and rectifies very quickly. So it is likely that if Windows 10 users make themselves heard, Microsoft will step back with this.
