The publisher has released a new benchmark video that tests the endurance of all three browsers on computers running. All of these are in the Fall Creators Update version of Windows 10.
Microsoft Edge offers a better battery life on a PC than Chrome and Firefox
Is the Edge browser better than Chrome and Firefox? Yes, according to Microsoft, at the level of energy consumption. The publisher has just released a new video that shows Surface Book laptops looping a video. That shows all three browsers until the battery runs out. In the end, the machine with Edge holds more than 16 hours, against about 13:30 for Chrome and just under 10 hours for Firefox.
According to Microsoft, experience shows that a PC with Edge has a 63% greater autonomy than Firefox and 19% greater than with Chrome. Unfortunately, Microsoft is stingy in information by not indicating which versions of browsers were used. We only know that the machines are equipped with the latest Fall Creators Update. That is an advantage for Edge because the Microsoft browser is designed to take advantage of the new version of Windows 10, for example at energy management. Also, video playback is not the only use of a browser and Microsoft ignores the results for browsing websites.
If we compare the results of the test with those of the video published in April, showing a similar analysis. So, we can see that Edge’s score has undoubtedly increased (from about 12:30 to 16:00). But also that the differences are tightened (77 to 63% against Firefox and 35 to 19% against Chrome). Not sure that these arguments are enough to convince users since. Also, according to the NetMarketShare site, Chrome represents 58.9% of the browser market in 2017, against 13.29% for Firefox, 13% for Internet Explorer and only 3.78% for Edge.
