Intel is striving to launch Xeon Cascade Lake to rival against AMD EPYC

Intel is working relentlessly to bring its 48-core Xeon ‘Cascade Lake’ processor to market before the end of the year, anticipating AMD’s game with its EPYC processors at 7nm.

This information is made known by a device that is filtered by the hardware vendor of the QCT data center through Techpowerup. The slide suggests a roadmap release for the extreme core count (XCC) version of Cascade Lake, which contains 48 CPU cores across two arrays in one MCM. This release is part of QCT’s Advance Shipment Program, which means that business customers can receive the hardware in pre-approved quantities. In other words, this is a limited version, and probably enough to cover the release of AMD’s 64-core EPYC “Rome” 7nm processor, or at least that’s the intention.

At the end of the first quarter and through the second quarter of 2019, Xion’s “Cascade Lake” family will essentially come onto the market, including variants with fewer cores. This is designed to compete with the AMD 7 nm EPYC family by 2019. “Cascade Lake” is probably the last Intel microarchitecture built under the 14 nm++ node and consists of 2 matrix multichip modules with 48 cores and a 12 channel memory interface (6 channels per matrix).

Since Intel had problems with its 10 nm node, AMD has become the technology leader in the server industry. EPYC processors arriving in 2019 will have more cores and will be manufactured in 7 nm, while Cascade Lake will have fewer cores and engraving at a 14 nm node.
