Intel announces Xe-HPG GPU: AI and Performance Oriented, for Games and Visual Clouds

Intel and its powerful Xe-HPG graphics processor will not only bring the Arc ‘Alchemist’ series to life in the desktop gaming market but will also bring products to life in other key segments for the company, such as workstations and servers.

Intel Xe-HPG, there will be variants for gaming, workstations, and servers

This news is interesting because the Intel Xe-HPG GPU was always meant for gaming, while the Xe-HP variant was always meant for data centers and servers and will remain so.

The difference is that the Xe-HPG GPU will be used for cloud gaming and media streaming, as well as AI and cloud visual inference products. In other words, this GPU can be used for game streaming services, similar to GeForce NOW or Google Stadia.

In the meantime, Xe-HP is only used for specific tasks on its own servers, and there are no plans for a commercial product that could use it.

So Intel will make two chips commercially, the Xe-HPG GPU for gaming and general-purpose tasks in data centers and servers, and the Xe-HPC GPU, which will be used in Ponte Vecchio graphics for ultra-high performance data centers and supercomputers. Koduri also mentioned that Xe-HPG will support professional applications such as 3DS Max.

The whole thing leads to a change in the roadmap, with Xe-HPG taking the place of Xe-HP.

Both Nvidia and AMD are following a similar strategy by using the same architecture for different markets, a solution that works very well with the Ampere and RDNA 2 architectures.
