Intel: 10nm performance exceeds expectations

Intel experienced a fantastic quarter, having sold literally every chip it produces. But there’s more good news, in terms of their 10nm node.

Intel has officially stated that its 10nm yields are above expectations and that it plans to launch at least nine 10nm products in 2020. Meanwhile, the 7-nm Intel Xe Ponte Vecchio GPU is still on its way into Q4 2021.

Intel is incredibly adept at improving the architecture while staying in the same node, but considering that 14nm has been around for a long time, the move to 10nm is eagerly anticipated and is likely to be a turning point in the company’s history. Intel has also shown that not only yields are higher than expected, but there will also be a total of nine 10nm products in use by 2020.

Here are the most important notes:

  • Yields of 10 nm are above expectations.
  • It is expected that nine 10nm products will be launched in 2020.
  • Intel will increase its wafer capacity by 25% in 2020.
  • The Ponte Vecchio 7nm GPU is on its way to the 4th quarter of 2021.
  • Intel DG1 GPU is likely to be one of the 10nm products that will be launched later this year. The other eight products are likely to be a mix of CPUs and FPGA/AI-based products.

As Intel is pursuing a 2-fold scaling factor for 7 nm and is also moving to EUV, the company seems ready to introduce its first 7 nm products (equivalent to TSMC 5 nm) in Q4 2021. This is good news, especially because of the immediacy of the 10 nm node, which we have been waiting for years.
