Corning’s miraculous glass has been called Gorilla for years. It has been used for years as a protective glass in front of displays, intended to break with less speed, although many users have a different opinion: Now a new generation of glass has been introduced.

According to its manufacturer Corning, Gorilla Glass 6 is the most durable cover glass to date. On average, a user drops their phone seven times a year, so multiple-case life is an important feature that Corning wanted to improve.

Investment in Gorilla Glass: What are Apple’s ulterior motives?

Apple announced in May that it would support its major suppliers financially with an investment. The first profiteer of this… more

Devices with Gorilla Glass 6 can withstand 15 falls from a height of one meter onto rough surfaces. The new glass is expected to be up to two times better than Gorilla Glass 5, which Corning has offered its partners since 2016. Competing glass mixtures would not have survived the first crash in the test setup, Corning says somewhat cocky.

“Gorilla Glass 6 is a completely new glass composition that has been chemically reinforced to achieve a significantly higher compression than is possible with Gorilla Glass 5. This makes Gorilla Glass 6 more resistant to damage,” said Dr. Jaymin Amin, Vice President of Technology and Product Development at Corning.

Corning has been an Apple supplier for many years. The increased durability of Corning’s new Gorilla Glass product is designed with all-glass smartphones like iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus in mind. It may already be used in the new 2018 iPhones, which will be presented in autumn.
