Google Stadia will come to iOS via a web application

Google has announced support from iOS for its cloud-based gaming service Google Stadia. By focusing on Microsoft, the company will overcome the limitations imposed by Apple’s cloud-based gaming service in the App Store over its mobile network.

Google says that Stadia is developing a progressive version of its web application. The app will run on a mobile version of Apple’s web browser Safari. Similarly, Microsoft plans to migrate its xCloud service to iOS next year.

Google, however, intends to start public testing of Stadia’s web application in the coming weeks and go beyond Microsoft. Meanwhile, Nvidia announced a beta version of its web application for GeForce Now, a cloud-based gaming service.

Apple clarified the rules for cloud-based gaming services in late August last year. It told providers like Google and Microsoft that Apple would not allow the use of their apps in the App Store because of its restrictions on software that streams games to iPhones and iPads.

Finally, Apple relaxed its restrictions after public criticism from Microsoft and others but asked the company to submit each game to the App Store for review and distribution. Microsoft has decided that it will develop a web application version of xCloud for iOS. Now Google is doing the same.

The iOS beta announcement coincides with the one-year anniversary of Stadia’s public release last fall, and Google also announced today that the basic version of Bungie’s Destiny 2 no longer requires a monthly Stadia Pro subscription and can now be played by anyone with a Google account who has signed up for Stadia.

State Share, the publisher’s publisher-friendly Stadia feature that allows players to share their scores with their viewers or followers on social media, will be available with IO Interactive’s Hitman 3 version next January.
