Rise of the Tomb Raider comes to Linux

Feral Interactive has once again been responsible for converting a game that came out for Windows more than two years ago with the DirectX 11 API to Linux, although it later received a patch for DirectX 12. The Linux version of Rise of the Tomb Raider has been developed with Vulkan, so it will be very interesting to see a performance comparison between the two versions.

Vulkan is a much more modern API than DX 11 and is able to take full advantage of current hardware, so the Linux version could have a major advantage in this regard, too bad the Nvidia and AMD drivers are less advanced than the Windows drivers, which can mask the end result.

The minimum requirements for running Rise of the Tomb Raider on Linux are as follows:

  • Operating system: Ubuntu 17.10
  • Processor: Intel Core i3-4130T or AMD equivalent
  • Memory: 8 GB of RAM
  • Graphics: 2 GB AMD R9 285 (3rd generation and higher GCN), 2 GB of Nvidia GTX 680 or higher
  • Storage: 28 GB of available space

Additional notes:

  •     * Requires Vulkan
  •     * Nvidia graphics cards require driver version 396.18 or later. If you need to update your drivers, we recommend using the proprietary GPU driver PPA.
  •     * AMD graphics cards require Table 17.3.5 or later. If you need to update your drivers, we recommend using the Padoka Stable PPA.
  •     * Vega graphics cards require Mesa 18.0 or later.
  •     * The 1st and 2nd generation AMD GCN graphics cards are not compatible.
  •     * Intel graphics cards are not compatible.
  •     * Requires a processor with SSE2 capability.

This is excellent news for all linLinuxayers.
