The existence of the Z390 is not really a surprise anymore because there have been a lot of leaks about it.

The X399 is, on the other hand, more mysterious but makes it possible to know that Intel will make evolve its catalog. The changes will affect the Mainstream and HEDT platforms.

Chipset Z390 and X399, for which processors?

The Z390 is presented as the successor of the current Z370. It will support Core Coffee Lake processors but also Cannon Lake. For its part, the X399 will be the necessary evolution of the X299 to exploit the HEDT derivatives of Coffee Lake and Cannon Lake, namely “Coffee Lake-X” and “Cannon Lake-X”. The future of the X299 is for the moment unknown, however, Intel mentions it for the Skylake-X and Kaby Lake-X chips.

To return to the Z390, this solution will be the next high-end chipset in the consumer offering. While the Z370 was only a small enhancement to the Z270, the Z390 promises significant improvements especially on the audio side (SoundWire) and support for ten USB 3.1 ports at 10 Gbps.

The Intel document confirms upcoming Intel news but does not indicate any particular date and does not go into details.
