The next gen of AMD after Navi is named as “Arcturus”. It is still unknown when AMD Navi’s graphical architecture will be released, but what its successor “Arcturus” has started to show its presence in news. As the fourth brightest star in the night sky, Arcturus could be the name for AMD’s new GPU architecture according to a report by Phoronix.
The codename of the successor of Navi escaped the slides of the AMD roadmap. The name Arcturis appeared in the Phoronix community forums, following a link publication. The codename is also supported by the fact that AMD names its GPU architectures with the brightest stars in the sky. Polaris is the brightest, followed by Vega, Navi, and now the Arcturus.
Most recently AMD mentioned in a roadmap slide the successor of Navi during its presentation on Financial Analyst Day 2017 by Mark Papermaster. This slide mentions that Vega is built on two silicon manufacturing processes, 14 nm, and 14 nm +. We now know that AMD intends to build a 7nm Vega chip that could be the world’s first 7nm GPU. Navi is programmed to be built at 7nm as the process is becoming more common in the industry. On the same slide, the successor of Navi is mentioned, which is based on 7 nm +, referring to an even more advanced process than 7 nm.
The arrival of this successor of Navi would occur not before at least 2020, so it is still a long way, and certainly we will see many rumors and leaks before that.
