AMD Navi 7nm GPU Shows Impressive Lab Performance

AMD changes all its chips to 7-nanometer designs. The first sample of these supposedly already exists and was even evaluated as a reference point. There are not many details about Navi yet, but a lot of rumors and speculations. For example, more than a year ago it was rumored that Navi would be the first AMD GPU to house circuits for artificial intelligence (AI) operations. It is said that the former Raja Korduri of Radeon Technologies wanted to enable AI functionality in Vega, but did not have the time or resources to do so.

“The 2019 Navi 7 nm chip won’t be a high-end graphics processor, but it will be a pretty powerful performance/stream chip,” Fuad Abazovic of Fudzilla wrote a few months ago.

While much of this is speculation at the moment, we know that AMD focuses on 7 nm designs for its CPU and GPU products. AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su will confirm the launch of the company’s GPU and 7nm Zen 2 in her opening speech at CES 2019, which is now only three months away.

“In 2019, AMD will continue to develop computing, gaming, and visualization technologies with the world’s first 7nm high-performance CPUs and GPUs, providing the performance needed to reach the next technological horizon. During her presentation at CES, Dr. Su and her guests will give an overview of the diverse applications of new computing technologies, ranging from solving some of the world’s toughest challenges to the future of gambling, entertainment and virtual reality with the potential to redefine modern life,” AMD announced earlier this month…..

Navi’s launch is scheduled for the second half of 2019. In addition, the DMAE will continue with a 7 nm+ update, possibly codenamed Arcturus. There is not much information about Arcturus, for example, whether it will also attract the middle-class market or whether it is a return to competition at the upper end.
