The new data indicate that AMD has completed the first Navi design. The chip is expected to appear under the name Navi 12 in the first half of 2019. But the real high-end models Navi 10 and Navi 20 are still to come.
After the powerful return of AMD in CPUs, it was expected that AMD graphics cards could also reach Nvidia GPUs this year. As Nvidia sets new performance records with the new 2000 series, AMD with the RX Vega almost just caught up with the latest generation of Nvidia with the GTX 1080.
So there’ s simply no competition in the high-end segment at the moment, as the prices of the new Nvidia series make it clear. However, the next generation of AMD GPUs, Navi, is expected to wait at least until the second half of 2019. According to the latest information from wccftech, there might be at least one smaller Navi system appearing before.
The Navi 12 GPU is supposed to join 40 computing units (Cus) and is based on a new microarchitecture (uArch) instead of the “old” GCN. The new architecture is also used in Navi 10 and Navi 20.
Navi 12 could be released in the first half of 2019, but will not yet be able to compete with the best Nvidia charts. The bad news is that the real flagship, the Navi 20, is still not expected before 2020. The Navi 10 could appear in late 2019 or early 2020.
