Just in time for the launch of Apple’s redesigned Mac Pro Tower, OWC has unveiled the “fastest SSD they’ve ever built”, the Accelsior 4M2. The high-end SSD combines multiple M.2 drives to deliver up to 8TB of storage with a read/write unit of over 6000MB/sec.
OWC has introduced the “fastest SSD ever built”, the Accelsior 4M2
The OWC Accelsior 4M2 SSD is essentially a PCIe x8 backplane based on the ASMedia ASM2824 PCIe 3.0 driver, which in turn is used to control the four PCIe 3.0 x4 M.2 slots. The accelerator fills these slots with four of the Aura P12 M.2-2280 OWC units. To ensure consistent performance and reliability, the SSD is also equipped with a large heat sink, as four Aura drives can develop a high temperature.
In terms of capacity, the Accelsior 4M2 storage solution will be available in 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 8TB gross sizes. OWC, in turn, classifies the SSD for sequential read speeds of up to 6318 MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 6775 MB/s.
As is often the case with high-end OWC drives, the Accelsior 4M2 is designed for use with SoftRAID OWC software, which supports various RAID modes (RAID 0, RAID 1, JBOD, etc.). Otherwise, the unit can also be used on PCs, but PC users must provide their own RAID software.
OWC will begin shipping Accelsior 4M2 SSDs starting in the week of December 30. The barebone card costs $249.99, the 1TB version costs $479.99, while the 8TB model has a retail price of $1,599.99.
