Although the GeForce RTX 20 series is now on the front page of the Nvidia catalogue, the GeForce GTX 1000 series still exists. Nvidia even offers some developments. The GDDR5X lands on the GeForce GTX 1070.
It’s surprising but true. After the GeForce GTX 1060 6GB was enriched with GDDR5X-based and a GPU GP104, it’s now the turn of the GeForce GTX 1070 to use this faster memory. Unfortunately, Nvidia is not taking this opportunity to improve performance.
ZOTAC is one of the first partners to offer this development with its GeForce GTX 1070 AMP Extreme Core GDDR5X (model: ZT-P10700Q-10P). The beauty takes advantage of overclocking at the carton exit, but there are some inconsistencies. Its 8GB RAM remains calibrated to 8Gbps, although the GDDR5X can offer 10Gbps. As a result, we have a slower card than the classic GDDR5 version. The GTX 1070 AMP Extreme Core GDDR5 benefits from the 8.2 Gbps calibration. The same applies to the GPU frequency with 1607 MHz in the first case for a boost mode at 1797 MHz compared to 1805 MHz for the GDDR5 model.
However, both cards should provide equivalent performance. The GDDR5X version, on the other hand, should offer a slightly larger overclocking because of its RAM.
