The Internet giant and competitor of Russian Google, Yandex, launches its first smartphone under Android. It is simply called Yandex.Phone and offers a very interesting value for money.
A successful smartphone with a complete ecosystem
The Yandex.Phone is displayed at a price of 17,990 rubles, about 238 euros and cheaper than competing foreign smartphones. At this price Russian customers get a Full HD (2160 x 1080) 18:9 screen of 5.65″ (and without notch), a Snapdragon 630 processor, 4GB RAM, and 64GB memory as well as USB-C and Jack 3.5 ports. On the back of the phone are a fingerprint sensor and a photo module with two 16MP and 5MP sensors, with a 5MP front camera.
Although Android 8.1 is installed, most Google services have been replaced by self-created ones. Thus the Yandex.Phone is delivered with home applications for payment, music, GPS navigation or VTC service, which also offers a food delivery service and dominates the American market. It also comes with a self-built voice assistant called Alice (which reads “Alissa” in Russian), with advanced voice command capabilities similar to those of the Google Assistant.
Yandex.Phone: First crucial test
This first attempt of the Russian giant is not insignificant. Yandex, which already offers a complete ecosystem with quality services comparable to those of the American giants, is trying to prove that it can also develop hardware. This smartphone should make it possible to measure the temperature of the Russian market and better understand consumer expectations in order to develop a full range of smartphones in the near future. Yandex is also working on autonomous driving and already offers a networked speaker in its national market.
