Today we have some interesting news for all those concerned about Internet security, as the Wi-Fi Alliance has just announced the official launch of WPA3, the new wireless network protection system. This is a long-awaited piece of news, especially if we consider the recent controversial WPA2 security issue we discussed at the end of last year.
As echoed by the Wi-Fi Alliance, this new version aims to address most of the vulnerabilities still existing in wireless networks. Specifically, the new generation of the popular standard comes more than a decade after the last major update, betting on a series of extremely interesting features.
According to the Wi-Fi Alliance, the WPA3 will have two different modes of operation: WPA3-Personal and WPA3-Enterprise, which will employ the latest security methods. In the case of WPA3-Personal, these networks will offer a more flexible, password-based authentication system that will ensure our security even when users choose weak passwords. In turn, WPA3-Enterprise will offer security equivalent to the security provided by 192-bit encryption, so its use will be of great importance in networks that transmit sensitive data, such as government networks.
In addition to the above, the new version of the standard will offer individualized data encryption, making it difficult for other devices connected to the same network to access shared information from our computer. Without a doubt, this is an update with more than interesting news, although it will probably take a few years before the new WPA3 will start to be used on a regular basis.
