The Wi-Fi Alliance adds a new wireless standard, Wi-Fi 6E, which provides support for 6GHz connections.

We currently only have bands of 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Now Wi-Fi 6E extends the band of wireless connections to 6GHz.

The Wi-Fi Alliance introduces new terminology to distinguish upcoming Wi-Fi 6 devices that can operate at 6GHz, a significant portion of the unlicensed spectrum that will soon be available to regulators worldwide.

Wi-Fi 6E is a name that will help to easily identify devices that support wireless connections in this frequency band. Wi-Fi 6E devices are expected to become rapidly available once regulatory approval is granted, and will use this additional spectrum capacity to deliver continuous Wi-Fi innovation and valuable contributions to consumers, businesses and the economy.

“When the regulatory landscape allows, we expect companies to move aggressively with products operating in the 6 GHz range because they understand the tremendous value that this portion of the unlicensed spectrum brings to their customers,” said Phil Solis, research director at IDC.

As noted earlier, the first Wi-Fi 6E devices are expected to include Wi-Fi phones and consumer access points, followed by enterprise access points.

The Wi-Fi Alliance states that “6GHz addresses the scarcity of the Wi-Fi spectrum by providing contiguous blocks of spectrum to accommodate 14 additional 80 MHz channels and 7 additional 160 MHz channels needed for high-bandwidth applications requiring faster data throughput, such as high-definition video and virtual reality.

By 2020, a large number of new devices are expected to support this new connectivity standard.
