Western Digital is expanding its WD Black line of PCIe 4.0 SSDs with the SN770 model, which improves the performance and efficiency of models in the series.
WD Black SN770: A DRAM-less design with 4900 MB/s write performance.
The new WD Black SN770 is an M.2 SSD with PCIe 4.0 interface and replaces the current SN750 SE model, which has been significantly improved in two areas: Read/Write performance and energy efficiency.
The WD Black SN770 achieves sequential read speeds of up to 5,150 MB/s and sequential write speeds of about 4,900 MB/s. Controlled usage is achieved without DRAM cache. The drive is 40% faster and up to 20% more efficient than the current SN750 SE.
This drive also increases the maximum storage capacity to 2 TB, the previous model had 1 TB.
The controller used by Western Digital is from Sandisk and is not the fastest we know of. We’ve seen SSDs with speeds of over 7000 MB/s with more advanced controllers, although this may or may not have a positive impact on the price.
Pricing seems a bit high when compared directly to the SN850, which is capable of 7000 MB/s speeds. For example, the 500 GB model costs $94.99, while the 1 TB model costs $159.99. The difference is not very big and the speeds are much higher.
