The big giant quietly announced yesterday the name of the next version of its operating system, Ubuntu 18.10. It was already known that the first part of the name was Cosmic, now we know that the full name will be Cosmic Cuttlefish.

After the release of the final version of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, the latest version available with extended support, Ubuntu 18.10 marks the beginning of the development of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, which will be the next version with five-year support. Shuttleworth has stressed that he wants the next cycle to focus primarily on improving security, probably a good target in a world that is experiencing increasing cyber attacks, with Linux seeing three times as many malware threats in recent years.
It is still too early to guess what features will come with Ubuntu 18.10 to be released in October, however, some non-LTS versions usually come with few new features and this could be the case with this new version. If the new cycle is going to be safety-oriented, it can be pretty quiet, with most changes under the hood.
The Snap packages could be one of the main pillars of greater security in the new LTS version of Ubuntu, as this type of application works in isolation from the rest of the system, and includes all the libraries needed for its operation. This means that if there is a security problem in one of these packages, it cannot affect the rest of the system.
