It sounds surprising that Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney is calling the Fortnite cryptocurrency a “scam,” but apparently he has no official connection to the company or the shooter. Sweeney tweeted that the company’s lawyers are already working on the case, so it certainly won’t be long before the matter is off the table.
Fortnite Token would have first appeared last year. Based on the name and the big F used as the logo, you would think that there would be an official connection to this game. But no, the creators of the coin describe it as a fan-created project.
It seems Sweeney was informed of this a few days ago when he tweeted that the Fortnite cryptocurrency was a scam after its creators encouraged people to buy the coin to sell on the OpenSea website.
This is a scam.

“The Fortnite token is not a fraudulent cryptocurrency project,” the creators said. “Instead, this is a cryptocurrency project created by fans of the game and driven by the community, with no particular owner or CEO deciding its future.”
Sweeney went on to confirm that there is no Fortnite cryptocurrency, adding a warning for Fortnite token developers that Epic’s lawyers are working on the matter. He also criticized crypto markets for allowing such copyright-infringing tokens.
That’s not to say Sweeney is completely against the technology. Valve banned blockchain games from Steam last year. This prompted the rival’s CEO to confirm that Epic Games Store will allow them on its platform. However, he added that Epic would not use cryptocurrencies in its own titles.
