2019 was an important year for video games. Although the idea of playing in the cloud is less relevant when it comes to exclusive titles or major releases, the idea of playing in the cloud became a reality thanks to Google Stadia and Microsoft’s Project xCloud.

Enjoying video games without dedicated hardware or complex configurations is something that Google has promoted, although the initial experience with Stadia was left to chance and users do not see it as an alternative that will replace desktop consoles.

For its part, Microsoft revealed in an interview with Game Informer that latency is something that it is and will not go everywhere.

According to Kareem Choudhry, vice president of xCloud, Microsoft’s job is to focus on consistency, not the absence of latency. Preliminary test results are positive for Microsoft, saying that games like Killler Instinct or Tekken 7 are playable in the cloud.

Besides shooters or racing games, the combat genre is one of the candidates that fall victim to latency. Microsoft knows this and Xbox president Phil Spencer went even further by saying that nothing replaces the experience of playing locally on a console.

Streaming is a technology of convenience. It’s a technology of choice when you’re away from your console and want to play.

Spencer says they don’t see cloud games as a substitute for the traditional experience of playing games on a dedicated system. It’s clear that Microsoft is not going to choose this technology right now, after all, we are looking at the upcoming launch of their next console.

The Stadia case is different, as Google is trying to get on fertile ground with its service. The problem is that it hasn’t got off on the right foot, and it’s not just the latency that’s to blame, but also the business model that has so far caused apathy among consumers.
