Steam Link will probably no longer allow app purchases

Apple appears to be forcing Steam to disable purchases in Steam Link, although it is only a VPN app that keeps in touch with a Windows or MacOS machine.

Beta testers of the Steam Link app have reported that in-app purchases are no longer possible in the app. The software connects to your own computer via WLAN and actually, the user only sees his own screen on the iOS device. The biggest advantage over normal VPN software is that game commands are passed directly from the iPhone or iPad to the running game.

Apple had kicked Steam Link out of the App Store because this mechanism allows game purchases without Apple commission. If Steam now disables the purchase options directly, there is a good chance that the app will still make it into the App Store.

Beta testers report that instead of the usual purchase buttons the hint appears in the iOS app that the user can purchase the game via his PC. This may be a little uncomfortable in individual cases, but the footpath should be limited. Steam Link cannot be used over the Internet but only over the home WLAN.

In this case, Apple made it clear once again that the rules that no in-app purchase may take place without commission for Apple also apply to VPN apps. However, pure remote desktops are excluded. For Apple, this is a good deal, as the company charges 30 percent commission.

However, Steam Link has not yet returned to the App Store, so the final conditions are not yet clear.
