Some time ago Sony confirmed that they had discontinued the PS Vita, their handheld console, which has never really taken off on the market. But after this confirmation, it was not known much more. Finally, it has also been confirmed that they will stop producing physical games for the console. But digital distribution will continue to exist.
Sony’s European and American divisions have decided to stop manufacturing the Vita GameCards in 2018. But it won’t be effective until April 1 of next year. From this date onwards, these cards will no longer be manufactured. One more step at the end of the console.
PS Vita says goodbye to the market
The console has never taken off in the global market, where it has had too much competition. It has sold about 16 million copies in 6 years on the market. Not enough numbers for a Sony console. So no one was surprised that the company is leaving this console. There have been many possible reasons for the failure of PS Vita.
The games were more expensive than for other consoles, and the competition they have faced over the years has been brutal. Mainly from the Nintendo DS, which gave more possibilities to users. Except in Japan, the reception of the console has been quite warm.
Sony has been killing PS Vita little by little, so it looks like we are now in the next phase. The console is saying goodbye to the market. It may be the first and only Sony handheld console we see on the market.
