Sony IMX586, the new 48 MP sensor capable of recording at 4K and 90 FPS

Sony, a leading manufacturer of photographic sensors for all types of devices has released the Sony IMX586, a sensor for smartphones and handheld devices that will delight photo enthusiasts.

Sony has introduced a new camera sensor that could compete with Huawei’s camera technology in the Huawei P20 Pro. The new sensor has an incredible 48-megapixel resolution. The new IMX586 sensor from Sony will probably be used in the new Xperia XZ3 and provide impressive results, especially under unfavorable light conditions.

According to Sony, the new Sony IMX586 sensor is going to be too small for its features, enabling the integration of an effective resolution of 48 MP in a size of 1/2 ″. This Sony IMX586 sensor offers performance that rivals that of high-performance SLR cameras, allowing users to capture high quality, high-resolution images with a very compact device.

Sony’s IMX586 sensor uses a series of Quad Bayer color filters, where the adjacent 2 x 2 pixels have the same color, allowing for greater sensitivity. During use in low-light conditions, the signal from the four adjacent pixels is added, further increasing the sensitivity, resulting in bright, low-noise images. Added to this is its ability to record at 90 FPS, making it possible to record incredible 4K videos with great fluidity.

At the moment, unfortunately, we don’t know of any smartphone model that will make its debut with this Sony IMX586, but it’s likely that the new Xperia XZ3 will include it in at least one of the two rear cameras. Photosensors for smartphones are evolving a lot over the last few years, giving users excellent photo capabilities in a device that fits in their pocket.

According to Sony, the largest number of megapixels is housed in an 8-millimeter ½ inch sensor. The resulting pixel size of 0.8 micrometers is improved by a light trick in the sensor. The so-called Quad Bayer technology is already being used by Huawei in the current P flagship, the P20 Pro. Sony’s sensor offers another 8 megapixels on top (40 MP vs. 48 MP) in comparison. Sony currently has the camera sensor with the highest resolution for smartphones on the market.
