Smartphones with 100MP cameras would be a reality this year

In a recent interview, Judd Heape, Senior Director of Product Management at Qualcomm, said we’ll probably see 64 and even 100 MP phones this year.

However, Qualcomm doesn’t want the market looking for “supercamera” smartphones. While the current Snapdragon chipsets (660, 670, 675, 675, 710, 845, 855) support resolutions up to 192 MP, features such as multi-frame noise reduction and shutter speed should be disabled. This means that phones will not be able to take a series of photos and combine them into a cleaner image. What they will do is take a single image with high megapixels and then use the pixel combination to create a lower resolution image. Today’s 48 MP phones combine 4 pixels in one for a final 12 MP shot.

This is the opposite way to the one used by other phones. Some like Galaxy S10, Pixel 3 or iPhone XS use lower resolution sensors and multi-frame magic to produce images with less noise and more detail.

On the other hand, there is a clear trend in this year’s mobile phones to opt for more megapixel cameras. Phones like the Xiaomi Mi 9 and Redmi Note 7 Pro have 48MP cameras. The Live V15 Pro even has a 32MP front camera in addition to its 48MP main camera. This trend will continue, but we don’t know which phones will come forward, because ironically the smartphones with the highest megapixels are the middle class.

Finally, Judd Heape revealed that Qualcomm’s next chipset (temporarily called Snapdragon 865) would provide support for HDR10 video recording.
